Description: |

The Asian Liver Center hosts a Youth Leadership
Conference on Asian and Pacific Islander Health on an annual basis at Stanford
University. The goals of the conference are to educate high school students
about hepatitis B, to teach them about running outreach events, and to inspire
them to lead the effort while giving them the tools to accomplish
community-based efforts. This is accomplished through interactive planning
workshops, an outreach simulation, and a group project to formulate and plan an
outreach project targeted to a specific community. To ensure that the students
enjoy themselves while learning, we also host several socials, including a dance
and talent show.
We have been very successful in receiving highly motivated applicants and having
well-behaved, eager participants. We also have a pool of qualified, engaging
speakers who are willing to come annually. Over the past five conferences there
has been a steady increase in hepatitis B knowledge. We have also seen an
increase in applicants for our Jade Ribbon Youth Council, a group of high school
students who plan outreach projects in the Bay Area. We have also given away
multiple Jade Ribbon Scholarships to past Youth Leadership Conference
participants who have implemented outreach programs in their own communities.
According to the students, two things we could do to improve on are scheduling
are: 1) more time to sleep and 2)more time to socialize with each other. We will
be making the necessary modifications to next year's conference.
Overall, we are quite pleased with the success of the conference in educating
our participants and in their success in conducting outreach when they return
home. |
